Teacher kills off celebrities on Twitter

FIDEL Castro, Mikhail Gorbachev and Pope Benedict XVI - Italian Tommasso Debenedetti has killed them all in fake tweets aimed at exposing shoddy journalism that have earned him global notoriety.

The latest victim of Debenedetti's unusual hobby is British author JK Rowling, whose death in an accident he announced from a fake Twitter account purporting to belong to fellow writer John Le Carre.

"Death works well on Twitter," Debenedetti, who is in his 40s and says he teaches literature at a school in Rome, told AFP in a phone interview.

Debenedetti said that when he saw his Le Carre account had 2500 followers including journalists from major British, German and US media, "I decided to make John Le Carre say JK Rowling had died."

Debenedetti said the tweet was then retweeted hundreds of times and a Chilean television station even gave the false news as fact.

The literary fake artist says his aim in all of this is to "show that Twitter has become a news agency - the least reliable in the world.

"Unfortunately, journalism works on speed. False news spreads exponentially," he said, pointing out that retweets by journalists lend credibility to rumours even if they are not actually published.

"In the end, everyone forgets what the original source was," said Debenedetti, who in perhaps another sleight of hand insists his first name be spelled "Tommasso" and not the more usual "Tommaso".

Among his many claims to internet infamy, Debenedetti boasts of having forced Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi to deny the pope had died after sending a false tweet purportedly from the Vatican's Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone.

He claims his tweet announcing the death of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad made the price of oil go up and that another one about the demise of last Soviet leader Gorbachev prompted someone to go and update his Wikipedia page with the day of his death.

Debenedetti calls these his "games" and appears unconcerned about any unease they may cause, saying that he comes out and claims the rumour as his own invention within an hour of sending the first tweet.

"I only target leading figures who have all the means at their disposal to respond very quickly. I would never announce the death of a lesser-known writer or my next door neighbour," he said.

"I don't want it to go too far. I'm not a crook."

Journalists "should be more prudent and carry out all the necessary checks, particularly in local media, local radio and internet sites which fall most easily into this trap", he said.

"I just want to show up the fragility of social media, where anyone can be anyone," he said.

Debenedetti also has a more postmodern literary side and he has created false Facebook pages for writers Umberto Eco and Mario Vargas Llosa, quoting them saying improbable things that they never said.

The grandson of a famous Italian literary critic, he has also authored dozens of fake interviews with famous writers which he says he has managed to place in a variety of media as the real thing.

It was Debenedetti's made up interview with Philip Roth that revealed his elaborate ruse after some US journalists asked the famous writer about some comments against US President Barack Obama quoted in some media that he had in fact never made.

Debenedetti does not regret his actions, saying only: "I just wanted to see how far I could take it."

Wikipedia losing editors, study says

Wikipedia, one of the world's biggest websites, is losing many of its English-language editors. Source: AAP

WIKIPEDIA, one of the world's biggest websites, is losing many of its English-language editors, crippling its ability to keep pace with its mission as a source of knowledge online, a study says.

The study led by Aaron Halfaker of the University of Minnesota found that the number of "collaborators" or volunteer editors has been on the decline from around 56,000 in 2007 to some 35,000 at the end of 2012.

The researchers said there were a number of reasons, including the rise of automated programs or "bots," but also noted that some potential contributors were being discouraged by Wikipedia's structure.

"Several changes the Wikipedia community made to manage quality and consistency in the face of a massive growth in participation have ironically crippled the very growth they were designed to manage," the researchers wrote in last week's American Behavioral Scientist.

"Specifically, the restrictiveness of the encyclopedia's primary quality control mechanism and the algorithmic tools used to reject contributions are implicated as key causes of decreased newcomer retention."

They said that while Wikipedia had sought to root out less competent editors, its rules had also discouraged "desirable newcomers" who get discouraged when their contributions get deleted.

Wikipedia has editions in 285 languages. Its founder Jimmy Wales has cited the need to make Wikipedia more open to newcomers, to keep up with the vast amount of information it is trying to process.

But the authors of the study said Wikipedia was being crimped by its rules trying to improve quality.

"Wikipedia has changed from 'the encyclopedia that anyone can edit' to 'the encyclopedia that anyone who understands the norms, socialises him or herself, dodges the impersonal wall of semi-automated rejection and still wants to voluntarily contribute his or her time and energy can edit,'" they wrote.

Lowering speeds will cut road toll: expert

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 04 Januari 2013 | 11.51

CUTTING the speed limit could significantly reduce the number of people who die on Australian roads, a leading road trauma researcher says.

A total of 48 people died on Australian roads this Christmas/New Year period, slightly less than the 50 who died over the 2011/12 period, according to the Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Agency (ANZPAA).

Professor Max Cameron from the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) says there are things that can be done - especially on rural roads - to further cut the road toll.

"The modern thinking about road safety is we've gone about as far as we can go in preventing crashes ... but we want to make those crashes less injurious and the key to making crashes less injurious in terms of fatal outcome is to crash at lower speeds," Prof Cameron told AAP.

"No matter how the crash occurs, whether it's drink-driving or drug-driving or fatigue, if you crash at a lower speed you're much less likely to result in a fatal crash."

This holiday season, NSW - which started its holiday road period two days before the rest of the country - had the highest number of fatalities with 15 deaths, followed by Victoria where nine people lost their lives.

For 2012, Victoria had a record low road toll of 279, making it the fifth consecutive year of improvements.

South Australia was the only other state to reduce its road toll for 2012, according to Victoria Police.

Prof Cameron attributed this to speed limit enforcement.

"The one thing that both those states do, and Victoria in particular, is really get serious about speed enforcement," he said.

"Most other states seem to be even apologetic in terms of enforcing even existing speed limits let alone the lower ones that I'm talking about."

But SA's acting assistant police commissioner Michael Cornish said the state's seven deaths over the period were all avoidable.

"In some cases those who died made very deliberate decisions to place themselves and other road users at risk by speeding or drinking alcohol and driving, but in some cases it was just a moment of distraction or inattention," Mr Cornish said.

Mr Cornish said despite an intensive policing campaign, positive drugs and alcohol tests during the holiday period were up on the previous year.

The number of positive drug tests rose from 33 to 97, alcohol offences increased to 220 from 209 while speeding fines more than doubled to 1440.

Mirren gets Hollywood Walk of Fame star

British actress Helen Mirren has been honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Source: AAP

BRITISH actress Helen Mirren, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Elizabeth II in The Queen, has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The 67-year-old Mirren saw her star unveiled on Thursday in front of the Pig 'N Whistle, one of Tinseltown's historic pubs, on Hollywood Boulevard. American playwright David Mamet and US director Jon Turteltaub attended the event.

Mamet just directed Mirren in an as-yet-untitled HBO film about American rock producer Phil Spector, who was sentenced to 19 years in prison in 2009 after being convicted of murdering a one-time actress.

In the film, which co-stars Al Pacino as Spector and is expected to air later this year, Mirren plays the producer's lawyer.

Turteltaub worked with Mirren on National Treasure: Book of Secrets in 2007.

Born in 1945 in the London suburbs, Mirren began her career on stage and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. She first appeared in films in the 1960s, tackling all genres from historical drama to musical comedy to action.

She took home an Oscar in 2007 for Best Actress for her work in The Queen - a role for which she also won a BAFTA and a Golden Globe. Mirren has earned three other Oscar nominations.

Since then, she has appeared in spy thrillers The Debt and Red, and currently stars in Hitchcock as the famed director's wife Alma - a role for which she has again been nominated for a Golden Globe.

On television, she is best known for her work as Detective Jane Tennison on Prime Suspect - a role that has earned her three Emmys.

Hitchcock releases in Australia on January 10.

Tasmania bushfire threatens township

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 03 Januari 2013 | 11.51

A LARGE bushfire is out of control in Tasmania and will impact the township of Richmond, fire authorities say.

An emergency warning has been issued for Middle Tea Tree Road in Richmond, northeast of Hobart.

"Fire under these conditions will be uncontrollable, unpredictable and fast moving," says an alert sent from the Tasmania Fire Service on Thursday afternoon.

"The fire is expected to put the area of (the) Richmond township and surrounds at direct extreme risk from the fire front."

Firefighters are anticipating embers to also create spot fires that may threaten homes.

Ten fire trucks have been sent to the blaze, which is expected to put the township of more than 800 people at extreme risk.

The fire danger rating in the region is extreme.

A total fire ban has been declared for the entire state on Friday as firefighters prepare for the worst bushfire danger in the area in more than five years.

Kiwi holds as fiscal cliff euphoria

THE New Zealand dollar held above 83 US cents in local trading on Thursday after global market euphoria abated on US politicians averting the $US600 billion fiscal cliff during the New Year holiday.

The kiwi rose to 83.21 US cents at 5pm in Wellington from 83.02 cents at 8am, and was down from 83.73 cents in Asia. The trade-weighted index decreased to 74.75 from 74.96.

Markets around the world rallied after US politicians reached a budget agreement of sorts to prevent automatic spending cuts and tax increases which would push the world's biggest economy back into recession.

That optimism has been tempered as investors now prepare for politicians to figure out where the spending cuts will come, and how they will address another looming debt ceiling.

The US had its triple-A credit rating cut by Standard & Poor's in 2011 over politicians' inability to make meaningful progress on the debt ceiling.

"We're now on the ledge waiting for the next cliff the politicians have made for themselves," said Mike Jones, currency strategist at Bank of New Zealand in Wellington.

"The good news is priced in and the risk is now for the kiwi to dribble lower."

New Zealand's currency gained in local trading after dairy prices rose 2 per cent at the latest GlobalDairyTrade auction.

The average winning trade-weighted price increased to $US3,357 per metric tonne from $US3,311/tonne at the December 19 sale.

The kiwi fell to 72.57 yen at 5pm in Wellington from 73.05 yen, and declined to 79.37 Australian cents from 79.87 cents.

It advanced to 63.31 euro cents from 63.02 cents and was little changed at 51.28 British pence from 51.37 pence.

Gales disrupt New Zealand flights

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 02 Januari 2013 | 11.50

STRONG winds have caused problems for flights coming into the New Zealand cities of Wellington and Blenheim.

Air New Zealand spokeswoman Brigitte Ransom said a flight from Gisborne to Wellington had to stop at Palmerston North due to gale-force winds in the capital.

The diversion caused a scheduled Wellington to Palmerston North flight to be cancelled, Ms Ransom said.

Two return flights between Blenheim and Wellington and one return flight between Blenheim and Auckland were also cancelled due to a big blow in the Marlborough town, while one flight from Auckland to Blenheim was diverted to Nelson.

There were also reports of a Jetstar flight from Auckland to Wellington being forced back to Auckland because of the gales.

Home prices fall, again

AUSTRALIAN home prices have fallen for the second consecutive year as nervous consumers continue to sit on the sidelines of the housing market.

Home prices eased 0.4 per cent on average across Australia's eight capital cities during 2012, according to the monthly RP Data/Rismark Home Value index released on Wednesday.

Melbourne homeowners fared worst, with prices down 2.9 per cent on average over the year, while Brisbane and Adelaide prices were both down 0.8 per cent.

Darwin had the strongest housing market, with prices up 8.9 per cent, while Sydney prices rose 1.5 per cent and Perth prices climbed 0.8 per cent.

Home prices fell 0.3 per cent across capital cities during December.

RP Data senior research analyst Cameron Kusher said home prices had fallen for two consecutive years and were now 5.7 per cent lower than their historic highs of November 2010.

There was a bright spot in the data, however, with house prices up 1.8 per cent from their lowest point set in May 2012.

But Mr Kusher said recent interest rate cuts had not been enough to spur growth growth in the sector.

"It has become clear that adjustments to official interest rates by the Reserve Bank are not having the same impact on consumers as they have in the past," Mr Kusher said in a statement.

The Reserve Bank of Australia's cash rate, currently at 3.0 per cent, is 1.75 percentage points lower than its level at the start of November 2011.

Over the same period, standard mortgage rates have dropped an average of 1.35 percentage points.

Mr Kusher said that with consumers saving more and spending less, the housing market was likely to remain relatively subdued through 2013, though he did expect prices to rise over the year.

CommSec chief economist Craig James said property investors were still making money, with RP Data figures showing returns from the sector up four per cent over calendar 2012.

"While Aussies are cautious on going into debt, (the) population is still rising while home building has remained weak," Mr James said.

"So rents are still rising and so are investment returns on property."

Sydney remained the most expensive place to buy in 2012, with a median house price of $665,000, while Hobart was the cheapest, with a median house price of $325,000.

Hugh Hefner marries 26-year-old girlfriend

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 01 Januari 2013 | 11.50

PLAYBOY boss Hugh Hefner has wed his girlfriend Crystal Harris.

The 86-year-old publishing tycoon and 26-year-old Harris exchanged vows at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, California, on Monday.

The excited bride kept fans updated about her big day with posts on Twitter. In one she wrote: "Today is the day I become Mrs Hugh Hefner. Feeling very happy, lucky, and blessed."

She also uploaded a picture of staffers setting up the altar, alongside a caption which read: "The mansion is looking beautiful #weddingbells".

Hefner and Harris were originally set to walk down the aisle last year, but the model-turned-lingerie store owner got cold feet and called off the wedding.

They reconciled in May and Hefner proposed again earlier this month, announcing he was planning to ring in 2013 as a married man.

This is his third marriage - he was married to Mildred Williams from 1949 to 1959, and he wed Kimberley Conrad in 1989. The couple divorced in 2010.

Australia ready for seat at UN table

AUSTRALIA has much to contribute when it takes its seat on the United Nations Security Council, Foreign Minister Bob Carr says.

Last month Australia was named a non-permanent member to the 15-country council at the UN headquarters in New York.

The council's first meeting for 2013 is scheduled for this week.

Senator Carr said North Korea's banned rocket launch in December would be an immediate issue in which Australia would be able to add value.

"We can contribute on a serious appraisal of whether strengthened UN sanctions can provide a security for South Korea and Japan that they feel in need of after the militarism ... of North Korea," he told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday.

Senator Carr also said Australia's assistance in the nation-building of Afghanistan, East Timor and the Solomon Islands would assist the council in discussing issues about Africa.

About 80 per cent of the council's workload focuses on African nations, Senator Carr said.

Written By Unknown on Senin, 31 Desember 2012 | 11.51

A passenger train has hit a herd of elephants at a railway crossing in eastern India, killing five. Source: AAP

A PASSENGER train killed five elephants when it ploughed into a herd crossing railway tracks in eastern India.

R.N. Mohapatra, a railway spokesman, says the train struck the animals early on Sunday in the Rambha forest area, about 180km south of Bhubaneshwar, the capital of Orissa state.

J.D. Sharma, chief conservator of the state's wildlife department, accused the railway authorities of ignoring his department's warning that trains should slow down because a herd of elephants was moving in the area.

Mohapatra said the warning came too late.

Dozens of elephants have died in India in recent years after being struck while crossing railway tracks that often run through national parks and forests.

India's wild elephant population was recently estimated at about 26,000.

NDIS, education before election: Gillard

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 30 Desember 2012 | 11.51

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard says her government has two major items to implement in 2013 before going to an election - introducing the National Disability Insurance Scheme and undertaking further major education reforms.

Ms Gillard took time off from her holidays to make an appearance at the Woodford Folk Festival on Sunday.

She says the government would continue to work to keep the economy strong and jobs rolling, but the other two issues were her "two big ambitions for 2013 before we get around to winning that election".

"I want to see us launch the National Disability Insurance Scheme on the first of July," she told the festival crowd.

"Then the other thing I've got a really big focus on is delivering on further education reforms.

"We had a fair old wake up call in international testing (recently). We can make sure our kids can get a world-class education."

She said the government had already made changes to a number of schools that had been struggling.

"What we've got to do now is take it and upscale and give it to every school and make a difference to every school.

"I'm absolutely determined that we're battling through on that."

A federal election is not due to until October next year, where Labor hopes to regain its majority.

Ms Gillard has led a minority government with the support of key independents Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott since 2010, but she said the situation had not dented her agenda.

She pointed to a number of achievements including introducing the carbon tax, putting healthcare on a sustainable footing, introducing the Queensland flood levy, education and aged care reforms. But did not mention asylum seeker policy.

"The really big decisions this government's taken would be effectively the same," she said.

"We would have done the same things as a majority government because they are the right thing to do.

She said the introduction of carbon pricing was in some ways made better by the negotiations needed in a minority government.

"It meant we could work across both houses - the house and the Senate - not just put something in the Senate and have it knocked over, which was the history of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, but actually work in a way which the proposition that went to the parliament was going to get carried."
